Process

Process

The Virginia Airport System Economic Impact Study will kick off with a comprehensive data collection effort spanning all public-use airports. Data will be gathered through various surveys. These surveys are designed to capture the unique economic characteristics of each airport. Survey participants will include airport representatives, their tenants, and passengers.

Throughout this process, the study team will engage airport stakeholders via webinars, industry presentations, and in-person visits to approximately half of the Commonwealth’s airports. Once data collection is complete, the data will be modeled to calculate the activity and economic impact of Virginia’s airports. The findings will inform the project’s deliverables which will be made available on this website as they are developed.

01

Overview

The Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV) is excited to launch the Virginia Airport System Economic Impact Study. This study will quantify and document the economic impact of Virginia’s airports at the individual and statewide level. With non-stop destinations to six out of the seven continents in the world, Virginia’s airports play a vital role in the state’s economy. This study will analyze aviation activity and produce written and visual deliverables to illustrate the overall impact of Virginia’s Airport System.

02

Purpose

The study was initiated to evaluate the economic importance of Virginia’s airports and to provide the DOAV with the latest available data on the economic impact of the state’s aviation industry. By showcasing the importance of aviation within Virginia, future public investment can be further validated through the results of this report. Additionally, this collaboration effort between the state and its airports will foster working relationships that can be carried into future projects throughout the state.

03

Outcome

The results of this study will be documented in a comprehensive technical report and an elegantly designed statewide executive summary brochure. Furthermore, recognizing that an aviation economic impact study primarily serves airports, the project team will conduct a training webinar for all airports. This webinar will explain the methodology and findings, enabling airports to effectively communicate the results to their communities.
